BALAYAGE FAQs

If you’re wanting an effortless, sun-kissed look, balayage is for you! As one of St. Louis’ top hair salons for balayage, our stylists are highly experienced and are happy to share their knowledge. Here, we have answered the most common questions we get asked at our premier salon. Find your stylist or contact us to learn more!

What is balayage and how is it applied?

Coming from the French term “to sweep,” this hair coloring technique sweeps the color on your hair in a feathery manner. It is applied by our expert hair colorists with a brush and backing board, giving them more control over the product application than in the other techniques like foil and cap.

What will a balayage do for my hair?

The freehand technique adds dimensions and movement to hair and can give you more natural-looking highlights. It can be warm, natural, or cool — and whether you go with subtle or bold, there will be no regrowth line or harsh “roots” showing with balayage. Is it suitable for all hair types and lengths?

Balayage looks great on both light and dark hair. It pretty much works for all lengths but doesn't always translate well to super short cuts because there isn't enough length for it to have that grown out effect. If you are someone who prefers to wear your hair straight every day, balayage works for you but you won’t necessarily see the depths of dimension as you would if you were to curl your hair.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s hair is different; thus, the time varies. There are multiple factors that can affect the overall amount of time it takes, including your hair's color history, the integrity of the hair, the density of the hair, and the desired look. The darker your starting color and the lighter you want to go with your balayage highlights, the more work it’ll take to achieve your desired end result. If you want balayage on light hair, lightening your strands likely won’t take as many sessions as it takes to get balayage highlights on dark hair, but that will depend on how light your desired balayage highlights are.

How do I maintain balayage highlights?

One of the best things about balayage is that it requires very little maintenance. The highlights will grow out naturally, so there won’t be any regrowth line or “roots” showing. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other color by using a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments, and heat protection when styling.
