FAQ About Hair Extensions

If you’re wanting to transform your look with beautiful long locks—hair extensions are the way to go! They can be tricky, but don’t worry, our stylists are experts on hair extensions. We at the Boulevard Hair Co. have answered the most common questions we get asked at our premier salon. Find your stylist or contact us to learn more!

Will extensions damage my hair?

Extensions will not damage your hair if properly cared for and maintained. Hair with hair extensions requires daily care, along with a little extra care on a weekly basis. Inspect your attachments thoroughly to avoid tangled attachments and unnecessary wear on both the extensions and your natural hair.

How long will they last?

No one can give an exact amount of days the hair will last. Though with proper care and maintenance, you can typically expect your extensions to last about eight to twelve months. This does require regular “move-up” appointments every six to eight weeks as well as following all guidelines provided to you by your hair extension specialist. The overall life expectancy of your hair extensions depends on the type of attachment and how well you maintain and take care of them, but your extensions and their attachment will last longer if you give a little TLC.

What types of attachment methods are there?

The stylists at Boulevard Hair Co. do hand-tied weft, tape-in, and clip-in hair extensions. The hand-tied weft extension is flat, flexible, and lays close to the scalp. The tape-in extension is 100% Remy human hair with the cuticle intact. The clip-in extension is quick and easy—only taking minutes to insert and seconds to pull out.

What should I do to my hair before getting my extensions at the salon?

Nothing! We’ll take care of the preparation for you. This includes a proper shampoo and blowdry to ensure your hair is clean and free from any oils and build-up. Clean hair will ensure that your hair extensions stay in securely.

How do I pick the color for my extensions?

You will not be alone in choosing a color that matches your hair. Your Extensions Specialist will help you with this. Our goal will be to match your hair from the middle to the ends. The blending of your hair on the bottom part is most critical for a natural, real-hair look. The new-growth hair at the root will not make for a good match because it tends to be a darker color and will not integrate as seamlessly with your own natural hair color.

Can I brush my hair extensions?

Yes, you must brush your hair carefully. About three times a day is recommended to help distribute natural oils and reduce tangles. Always start from the tips and work upwards while holding the roots with your other hand. You can use a special loop brush made just for extensions or a wide-tooth comb. A regular brush will not give the same type of results and inferior quality brushes can damage your extensions.

How do I wash my extensions?

Hair extensions need gentle cleansing. Always brush and detangle hair extensions dry before washing your hair. Use shampoos and conditioners that are for dry hair and add the most moisture. Check the ingredients and choose a shampoo without sulfate or phosphate. Gently massage your scalp and shampoo from the root to the tip. After, use a moisturizing conditioner from the mid-section to the end, avoiding the roots. Keep your head tilted back so that the water runs down the length of the extensions and avoid washing your hair in the sink. Wash your hair at least once a week or every three days if you have oily hair.

Can I use a leave-in conditioner?

You can also use a leave-in conditioner to add an extra dose of hydration. A leave-in conditioner will help to protect your extensions and seal the hair cuticle.

How should I sleep with my extensions?

Brush your hair before going to bed. You can tie your hair up in a low bun or ponytail. Be sure to use a scrunchie as opposed to a normal hair tie. Normal hair ties can sometimes pull with extra tension, loosening the hair extensions.

What types of products should I use?

Moisture is the most important thing, so products for dry hair are the best. Do not use products for oily hair or strippers that take out chlorine or product build-up because they will leave the hair dry. Use styling products that are zero or low alcohol. Your Extensions Specialist will help you navigate the products appropriate for your hair.

Can hair extensions be colored or permed?

Because the hair extensions have been processed and sterilized, doing any more chemical treatments on the hair is not advised. It can easily be ruined or not come out the color you want.

Can I curl, blow-dry, and heat style my extensions?

Yes, you can use heat when styling your hair—just remember your hair will dry out sooner when using hot implements and blow dryers, so air drying is a great idea.

Can I go swimming with hair extensions?

You can go in swimming pools and hot tubs but be sure to wash your hair right after swimming. Avoid getting your hair wet with salt water as the salt can take all the moisture out of the hair and cause it to tangle. Never braid your hair and go in salt water—it is best to wear it down. Add a spray in conditioner after swimming. We have also found that wetting your hair down with regular tap water prior to entering the pool or ocean can help keep the extensions less tangled.
